Battle Born Collective Statement on House Democrats Passing D.C. Statehood

Today, House Democrats passed H.R. 51 to make Washington, D.C. the nation’s 51st state. Battle Born Collective Executive Director Adam Jentleson released the following statement in response:

“We applaud House Democrats’ efforts to strengthen our democracy and end centuries-long disenfranchisement by passing a bill to make Washington, Douglass Commonwealth the 51st state. The over 700,000 residents of Washington, D.C. deserve to have their voices heard in Congress, just like every other American. This issue is as simple as ‘no taxation without representation,’ the creed that spurred our nation’s founding.

“The bill, like so many other issues such as equality for LGBTQ Americans, sensible gun violence prevention, and a path to citizenship, has broad bipartisan support among the American people, but is being blocked by the Jim Crow filibuster in the Senate.

“On their watch, Democrats cannot allow the Senate to become the same kind of legislative graveyard that it was under Mitch McConnell’s leadership. House Democrats understand the stakes, and we are encouraged by seeing them rally against the filibuster today and urge the Senate to swiftly end the filibuster. Leader Schumer has an opportunity and a responsibility to unite the Senate caucus behind DC statehood and end the Jim Crow filibuster, once and for all.”
