Washington, D.C. — Today, President Joe Biden endorsed changing Senate rules to pass voting rights legislation at his speech in Georgia. This is Biden’s strongest statement in support of addressing what he called the “most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War.” The President previously endorsed a return to the talking filibuster last March.
Battle Born Collective Deputy Director Tré Easton released the following statement in response:
“President Biden’s powerful endorsement of reforming the filibuster for voting rights is a welcomed and necessary step in the fight to preserve and protect the right to vote in this country.
“The stakes could not be clearer. As the president said, senators are either on the side of Dr. King or George Wallace. Of John Lewis or Bull Connor. Of Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis. The most basic constitutional right is under assault around the nation. The filibuster is the singular barrier to protecting it.”
“When the president announced his support for a return to the talking filibuster last March, we said we were looking forward to his continued leadership on the issue. We are pleased to see Biden bring his critical voice to this conversation. We just hope that it is not too late.”
