Statement on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Washington, D.C. — Today, the United States Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, overturned Roe v. Wade. This decision upends the privacy rights of millions of Americans and will have the immediate effect of ending the legal right to an abortion in all 50 states. Battle Born Collective Deputy Director Tré Easton released the following statement in response:

“The day we have long dreaded—and one that so many warned us about—has finally come. Six unelected jurists have, with impunity, erased the sacred right to an abortion and unleashed chaos on the country. While this moment is no surprise, it is still shocking. The Christian fundamentalist supermajority on the Court has just ushered in an era of pain, violence, and trauma for so many, and the carnage likely won’t end here.

“The pro-choice majority in this country was dealt a lethal blow today, and there can be no sugarcoating that. The time for pithy slogans and hollow promises is over. We require a new proactive strategy that understands the fullness of the political moment we now occupy. We need a Democratic Party—and Democratic Party leaders—unafraid to fight relentlessly for our rights and the version of this country we collectively seek. And let’s be clear: people who are not ready to make the structural changes we need to guarantee those rights are clearly not up to the task at hand.

“The individuals who led us to this moment will not be the ones to lead us out of it. We must acknowledge that fact and be intentional about what comes next. A better future for all of us is possible, but only if we act decisively to secure it.”
