Statement on For the People Act Vote

Washington, D.C. — Tonight, Senate Republicans filibustered a vote to begin debate on S1, the For the People Act. Battle Born Collective Senior Advisor Tré Easton released the following statement in response:

“For the third time in less than a month, Senate Republicans have blocked a key legislative priority of the majority. Senate Democrats must ask themselves a fundamental question: do they want to govern or not? The Republican commitment to unrepentant obstruction of even bipartisan proposals is on full display. The Democratic response cannot be unilateral disarmament.

“For the past decade, Democrats of every stripe have campaigned on raising the minimum wage, protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination, fighting the climate crisis, stemming the scourge of gun violence, protecting access to reproductive health care, and strengthening our democracy. Voters gave Democrats the rare opportunity to make good on all of those promises, but that opportunity is being squandered.

“The continued abuse of the filibuster is not an excuse for inaction. Democrats in the Senate can have a functional democracy or the filibuster, but not both.”
